Massage Therapy
Many doctors refer patients with muscle
and tissue injuries to a massage therapist to help with the healing
process. Anyone not familiar with this treatment may be wondering
what happens during a massage therapy treatment. When you visit a
therapist, you will lie on a long table or depending on your needs,
you might sit in a chair. Using long smooth strokes, the therapist
will gently massage and knead the muscles to help them loosen up.
This helps the muscles relax, heal and release the harmful build up
of toxins.
There are many ways the therapist can help you with a massage
treatment, such as:
* Relief of back pain
* Relief from arthritis and tendonitis
* Relives stress
* Aids in healing headaches
* Loosens up muscles to relieve muscle spasms
* Relief of repetitive strain to ligaments and tendons
* Helps with circulatory and respiratory conditions
* Speeds up recovery from injuries and surgeries
A typical treatment session lasts between 40 and 90 minutes. At your
first visit to the therapist, you will need to fill out forms
telling of your problems. This is a needs assessment and based on
this the therapist can individualize your treatment program. Not all
patients receive the same treatment because they all have different
needs in massage. Some may need only work on the muscles of the neck
and back. Others may need work on the shoulders, while others may
only need work on the legs. You can also get a full body massage for
relaxation purposes.
You are covered by a sheet at all times. The therapist uses oils to
make sure that he/she is not pulling the skin during the process.
You can still wear your underwear and your private areas are always
covered. During the treatment, there will be soft music playing to
aid in the relaxation of the muscles. Some therapists may also have
aromatherapy candles burning.
