Japanese Massage

Massage has always been a part of health care in the orient. Many people in the Western world are now benefiting from these age old therapies, especially Japanese massage. This type of massage therapy incorporates knowledge about pressure points in the body and the way energy moves through the body. There are two main types of the Japanese style of massage therapy.

Shiatsu

This form of massage is one of the newer techniques originating since the early 1900's. It focuses on using the fingers and the palm of the hand to massage the body. Through the sense of touch the massage therapist can use the sense of touch to find the parts of the body that need massage. The intent is to stimulate the body's natural response to muscle constriction and help the person relax.

The energy that flows through the body is called chi and the channels are called meridians. The meridians help to control movement of air, water and gas in the body, connect the limbs to the trunk, control the regulation of the organs and communicate within inside and outside the body. When these channels are blocked, a person becomes ill.

Nihon Kaifuku Anma

This is the main type of massage used in Japanese techniques. It has been practiced in Japan for more than 1300 years and longer than that in China. This technique involves deep tissue massage without using any oils. The technique is one of kneading the muscles and by using gentle pressure on specific parts of the body. The theory behind it is that the body has certain pathways for the flow of energy. Stimulating these pathways will help loosen them up so that the energy will flow to the major organs of the body.
